5 Tips from Professional Makeup Artist: How to Apply Concealer on Mature Eyes

Ah, the eternal quest for the perfect under-eye concealer. As we mature, this becomes less of a beauty routine and more of a mandatory chore. Picture this: you’re armed and ready to combat those under-eye circles that seem to have a life of their own. You’ve got your concealer, but it creeps into every fine line and wrinkle it can find, making you wonder if it’s playing hide-and-seek instead of doing its job.

Let’s face it—we’re not getting any younger, and our skin is keen to remind us every morning. We’re dealing with a drier complexion that makes our concealers perform more like cake frosting than a magical eraser. And those dark circles? The list goes on…

Jenepher Reynolds

But fear not! I talked to Pro Makeup Artist Jenepher Reynolds, who has over 20 years of experience, to share her secrets for flawless undereye concealer. Having worked for top Canadian magazines Chatelaine, Flare & Canadian Living (to name a few) and on such celebrities as Norah Jones, Wayne Gretzky and Harry Connick Jr., Jenepher’s resume is impressive. Get ready to take some notes—these tips are pure gold!

Here are Jenepher’s top 5 tips:

  1. Skin Prep Is Key: Start with well-hydrated skin. An eye treatment like Soke will work wonders, tightening, brightening, and hydrating the area without leftover residue.
  2. Choose the Right Shade: The right colour will ensure you use minimal product. Choose a peach-toned concealer to colour-correct the bluey purple we get.
  3. Less Is More: Apply ONLY to the areas where you need colour correction. Typically, these areas are slightly under the eye, in the outer and inner corners. Less product means less creasing.
  4. Don’t Neglect the Lid: As we mature, the skin on our eyelids becomes thinner, making darkness and veins more noticeable. Adding a little concealer over the top will brighten the entire eye area and give you an even canvas.
  5. Set it Right: Try a makeup setting spray. Spray a bit into your hand, dip a small makeup brush, and pat over the areas you have placed the concealer. Unlike powder, setting spray gives you a smooth finish with long-lasting power without adding texture.

So there you have it, the holy grail of under-eye concealment, straight from the expert’s mouth. Remember, in the battle against time, a little humor and the right products are your best allies. Embrace your age, your experience, and let your eyes tell your story – minus the dark circles, of course!
